Este 8 de septiembre se celebra el Día Mundial de la Fibrosis Quística y a propósito de ello es importante conocer los avances médicos que hasta ahora se vienen desarrollando para trata esta enfermedad degenerativa grave y con alta tasa de mortalidad, que afecta los tejidos glandulares, como del páncreas, pulmones, intestino, entre otros.

"La mucosidad se vuelve tan espeso que produce obliteración u obstrucción de algunos conductos, lo que finalmente se convierte en inflamación y fibrosis. Es una enfermedad grave con alta tasa de mortalidad", explicó Jorge Vergara, biólogo molecular de la Universidad de Chile e investigador de Vidacel, quien además detalló sobre el uso de las células madres para tratar esta condición.

¿Cómo actúan las células madres en un paciente con Fibrosis Quística?

De acuerdo al especialista, los tratamientos que hasta ahora se han aplicado a personas con este padecimeinto se basan, principalmente, en disminuir los síntomas y, por ende, mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes.
Sin embargo, el biólogo manifestó que esta nueva terapia con células madres es capaz de reparar los tejidos que se dañan a causa de la enfermedad. 

"Las células madres envían información como microvesículas, llamadas secretomas, que salen desde el interior de éstas, hacia la célula dañada, siendo incorporadas por ellas como Endosomas. Ya en su interior, estas vesículas liberan una serie de factores y organelos que está enviando la célula madre. Entre esos van mitocondrias y también pequeños RNA, los que se dirigen al núcleo y son capaces de reprogramar genéticamente a la célula dañada para que empiece a funcionar bien", precisó el médico.

Estudios respaldan el tratamiento

Vergara señaló que si bien es cierto que el tratamiento con células madres es confiable, y así lo respaldan una serie de estudios científicos; también advirtió que es importante tener en consideración el laboratorio donde se procesen dichas células.

En este sentido, alertó que: "El procesamiento se debe realizar en centros o bancos de células madres que cuenten con todas las certificaciones y registros que avalen la calidad y seguridad del material biológico. Además, deben contar con instalaciones que resguarden la integridad y esterilidad del producto".
